Since April, World Renew has been responding to hunger caused by drought and conflict in East and Southern Africa.
Nearly $800,000 (CAD) was received in support of World Renew’s response to this crisis. And with matching funds from the Government of Canada, Canadian donations were matched up to four times through our membership at the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, meaning even more hungry families will benefit!
This means that the $800,000 could grow to almost $4 million in support for families in need!
World Renew has provided life-saving food assistance to over 45,000 people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda, South Sudan, and Zambia. In some of the communities where World Renew has worked, farmers have had successful harvests and families no longer need outside support. However, in many areas families are still going to bed hungry and it is important that World Renew’s work continues. Here are three examples of ongoing work:

In Kenya, food assistance for 10,800 people is being extended through the end of January. Because of extreme food shortages this year, many families were forced to sell their livestock to be able to afford the essentials. This has left families with no livestock and no financial protection should another crisis come. To address this, World Renew is providing each 1,800 families with a goat so that they can begin to replenish their livestock numbers.

In Madagascar, a new food assistance project is expected to begin in November. Regions in southern Madagascar have been hit particularly hard by drought and the food security situation is dire. Families are often going to bed hungry.

In Uganda, the food security situation has improved in the communities where World Renew has worked, and there is no longer a need for food assistance. The goal in the coming months is to look at the underlying issues that these communities face that have made them so susceptible to drought.
